Viagra treats diabetes related impotence

Hello, I'm Dr. Sandra Hill. In this journal I will ireview the facts and news about impotence treatment..

Some medical conditions like diabetes can be the cause of erectile dysfunction . This article reviews the effect of the diabetes on the body and how Viagra acts in patients with Diabetes related impotence.

Diabetes related impotence is one of the most common male illnesses around. Close to 9 million men suffer from diabetes in the US alone and it is estimated that around 50 to 60 percent of those men will experience erectile dysfunction by age 50. This is a very troublesome fact considering that a 50 year old man is not considered to be old at all.

Why does diabetes produce impotence?

In order to understand why erectile dysfunction is more likely to happen in diabetic men than in non-diabetic men, we must first understand what type of damage diabetes can cause to the body as a whole. Keep in mind that a healthy and firm erection requires two important physical requirements: healthy blood vessels and healthy nerves. Diabetes affects both.

Diabetic men are more likely to develop other illnesses such as heart disease and strokes which can in themselves contribute to impotence. Diabetes is also believed to affect how blood flows into the body’s extremities; the fingers, the toes, and yes, the penis as well. Diabetes is also known to cause nerve damage. Damaged nerves can stop or slow down the erection process since they interfere with the sex organ’s ability to adequately tell the brain that it has received sexual stimulation and hence needs to become erect.

When diabetic men suffer from high blood glucose levels for prolonged periods of time they usually damage internal blood vessels within the penis. These damaged blood vessels are not able to properly transport oxygen to the nerves and this can also damage the covering of these nerves. Compromised nerves mean less sensitivity and less sensitivity means inadequate reaction to sexual stimuli. In layman terms, men with damaged nerves are not able to achieve a firm erection.

How Viagra Can Help

Viagra relaxes the penile arteries thus allowing more oxygen filled blood to enter the penile chamber. An adequate supply of blood allows the nerves to do their job, which is to signal to the brain that an erection is desired. Upon stimulation, the excess blood is what fills the penile tissue and engorges the sexual organ. Since Viagra is a PDE-5 inhibitor it will also prevent the blood from leaving the penis until ejaculation has occurred or until the person is no longer sexually aroused. Once sex is over, Viagra will usually not interfere with the penis’ ability to return to its flaccid state, though some men have experienced prolonged erections. If this occurs see your doctor immediately.

Studies have found that Viagra can improve a diabetic man’s ability to achieve an erection by around 56%. Diabetic men, who additionally reduce alcohol intake, quit smoking and/or keep blood sugar levels to a minimum see the best results.

Now doctors can recommend Viagra for men with diabetes. And I can tell that my diabetic patients who tried Viagra improved their sexual life and felt generally better.
